An Illustrated History Of The Matchday Programme

December 2025 sees the publication of a book documenting the history of the Brighton and Hove Albion Matchday programme.

‘Brighton & Hove Albion – An Illustrated History of the Matchday Programme’ charts the development of an essential matchday companion, from its humble beginnings in the late 19th century to the lavish productions seen today.

At nearly 400 pages with over 1,650 illustrations, the book is a wonderful journey through the life of a football club, seen through the eyes of the programme.

Author Ian Hine has drawn on his own memories of nearly 60 years as a fan, as well as his collection of Albion programmes that numbers over 2,000. He has also been helped with images from other Brighton programme collectors.

Published to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the club, the book charts the evolution of the programme over the years, reflecting the many ups and downs of a football club that now graces the Premier League. The programme is not just a record of attendance at a game, but a cherished historical artifact.

A portion of profits from the book will be donated to the BHAFC Foundation and the BHA Heritage Society.

About the Author
Ian Hine has been a Brighton & Hove Albion fan for nearly 60 years and a programme collector for just as long. His collection, which numbers some 2,000 Albion home programmes, includes the issue from his very first game in August 1968.

In 2009, he had an idea to preserve his programme collection for all to enjoy, and he began scanning each issue, page by page. The result is http://www.seagullsprogrammes.co.uk which has full scans of fanzines, handbooks and other memorabilia, as well as programme images dating back to 1895.
